What is this project?
The GIS Inventory Project is a detailed field study to inventory and model KEC’s entire distribution network. This project will create an accurate, up-to-date system model that will enhance our workflows now and into the future.
Why is KEC performing this project?
This project will strengthen our electrical system model, having a strong model will improve system reliability, reduce outage times, increase workflow efficiency, and support future planning.
Why should I care about his project?
The successful completion of this project will lead to quicker outage response times and greater system reliability. With an enhanced model, we can pinpoint outage locations faster, allowing our linemen to respond more effectively, thus getting your power back on faster and safer.
What do I need to do before they get here?
If you know access to your property is difficult, or if you have alternative ways of getting to KEC equipment, please let us know. Also, if you’d like a KEC-provided lock for your property entrance, please contact our office to arrange a pickup at no charge. This lock will let contractors access KEC equipment on your property without needing your assistance.
How do I know when contractors will be on my property?

Do they really need access to my meter?
Yes, as part of this project, we need to collect data on all distribution system assets, including your meter. The meter’s information is vital to the project’s success.
How do I get a new lock for my gate?
Please contact our office to arrange a time to pick up your KEC-provided lock.
How long can I expect them to be on my property?
The time required varies based on the infrastructure present on-site. For basic infrastructure you can expect a visit of 5-20 minutes. For more complex areas, the visit may take a up to a few hours.
Are they supposed to be taking pictures?
Yes, KEC requires photos of each asset, including your meter. These images belong to Karnes Electric Cooperative, Inc., are used internally, and won’t be shared externally. Your privacy and safety are extremely important to us, and we won’t distribute any sensitive information outside of the organization.
Why are they hammering something into the pole?
Davey Resource Group is also tasked with attaching tags to utility poles, which helps us maintain our model long-term. Each tag includes a QR code that you can scan to report damage or access helpful information.
They’ve been sitting in their truck for a while; is that normal?
Yes, it’s normal. Contractors may need time to upload data from their computers into our digital model. However, if you see behavior that seems unusual, feel free to contact our office.
Once they leave, will they need to come back?
Contractors may need to access your property up to 3 times to complete their work at a location. The first visit will be the initial inspection where data is originally collected. Followed by a quality control visit to verify that the data has been collected properly. This will not be needed at every location, but it will be standard procedure throughout the project. The last visit will only be required if there are additional issues with the data collection and quality control process. This will be uncommon and is not expected to happen frequently. KEC will give advanced notice if contractors need to revisit locations more than 2 times.
I don’t want them on my property at a specific date/time. Can we schedule the data collection?
Due to the project’s scope, specific scheduling is challenging. However, if access isn’t possible at a certain time due to extenuating circumstances, we may be able to accommodate. Contractors will leave your property as they found it and will do their best to not disturb your area. You don’t need to be present for work to be completed.
